Former Senator Durenberger, The White House Project lead list of new IRV supporters
Former US Senator Dave Durenberger has recently announced his support for Instant Runoff Voting in Minnesota. In doing so, he joins several other retired public officials, including former Governor Arne Carlson, former US Congressman Tim Penny, former State Majority Leader John Hottinger, former Attorney General Mike Hatch, former Saint Paul mayor George Latimer and former state senators Jane Ranum and Ember Reichgott Junge.
Current public officials enlisted among new IRV supporters include Rep. David Bly, representing Legislative District 25B and Sen. Jim Carlson, representing Senator District 38.
Also joining IRV's list of supporters is The White House Project, a national project that promotes women to public office. It endorses IRV as a means of boosting political opportunity for women.
The White House Project heads a growing list of female supporters including Liz Johnson, director of the Minnesota Chapter of The White House Project; Cheryl Dickson, former president and CEO of the Minnesota Humanities Commission; Sally Pillsbury, Communitiy Leader; Sara Stoesz, CEO & president of Planned Parenthood, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota; Dr. Maureen Reed, 2006 Independence Party candidate for lieutenant governor; Val Vargas, executive director of the Minnesota Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; Karla Ekdahl, community ceader; Donna Cassutt, vice chair, MN DFL Party; Blanche Hawkins community leader; Elizabeth Dickinson, former Green Party candidate for Saint Paul Mayor; Hennepin County Commissioner Gail Dorfman; Ramsey County Commissioner Toni Carter; Minneapolis Council Members Betsy Hodges and Elizabeth Glidden. Minnesota Speaker of the House Margaret Anderson Kelliher leads a long list of women legislators who support IRV.
IRV boosts political opportunities for women and expands political opportunities for communities of color, winning it the recent support of the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder and SD 58A candidate Jonathon Palmer. Long-time IRV supporter and current school board member, Peggy Flanagan, is also a candidate for the seat.
