If we hadn't used IRV, we would have had to do a recount! When all the first choice votes were counted, Garden and Goat Cheese were tied at 23 votes. Luckily, we were prepared - and had asked patrons to RANK their favorite omelets. Western had the fewest voters, 10, and was eliminated. Of voters who ranked Western first, 3 chose Greek second, and 7 chose Goat Cheese. This broke the tie, but no candidate had enough votes to win. Greek Omelet, in third place, was eliminated next, and by redistributing next-choice votes from these ballots, Goat Cheese picked up a staggering 14 votes to win with 44 votes total. Garden took second with 29 votes. CLICK HERE TO SEE THE OFFICIAL TALLY COFFEE NEWS CAFE – Vote Counting Process: All first choices were tallied. Garden and Goat Cheese were tied with 23 votes each, with Greek in second at 18 votes, and Western in last with 10 votes. There was no majority, and no clear favorite. Transfer round 1: Western Omelet, with no chance of winning, was eliminated. First place votes for Western were redistributed to those voter's second choices, giving Greek 3 votes and Goat Cheese 7 votes. All votes were tallied again. There was no majority so another runoff was required. Transfer round 2: Greek was still in third place, with 21 votes, and was eliminated. These votes were redistributed to the remaining top two candidates, giving 6 votes (29 votes total) to Garden and 14 votes (44 votes total) to Goat Cheese. 1 voter did not rank either of the top two candidates, so this vote was exhausted. Goat Cheese Omelet gained more than a majority of the total vote, and was declared the winner! »
