Host A House Party

Hosting your own Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) house party is a great way to educate your friends and neighbors about the upcoming November elections.

Get started organizing your own party today!

Before the Party:

1. Pick a date to host your party and email us to coordinate a speaker. If you like, find one or more co-hosts for the event.

2. Plan a Demonstration Election -- A demonstration election using food at the party is an excellent way to illustrate how RCV works. We typically use desserts, but you can vote on appetizers, wine, salads, pastries, or anything you like.

Once you decide, ask 3 or 4 people to contribute whatever is on the ballot, cut into bite-size pieces in sufficient quantities for all attendees to sample each. You will thus have three candidates for the ballot and guests will be asked to vote on the candidates in order of preference – 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

3. Invite everyone you know! Send out invitations by email or evite to friends, neighbors, elected officials representing your area, candidates running for office or others to inform them about an opportunity to learn about RCV. We can help invite your neighbors if you are able to open your home.

At the party:

Following is a typical party format, but feel free to be creative and do something different.

Start time 6:30 (may vary):

  • Sign-in
  • Mingle, eat, and drink
  • Sample desserts (or whatever is on the ballot)
  • Vote in the demonstration election (FairVote will help instruct voters how to complete the ballot)

About 7:15

  • 10-15 minute presentation and Q&A by FairVote Minnesota about Ranked Choice Voting and the 2009 Minneapolis elections.
  • Demonstration election votes are tallied during the presentation and presented at the end.

Rest of the night

  • Continue the fun!
  • Make sure everyone signed in and collect any additional signatures

After the Party:

  1. Email a brief summary of the event to info@fairvotemn.org
  2. Bask in the glory of knowing you've done your part to help educate voters about Ranked Choice Voting before the Nov 3rd election!
